Do You Time Travel?
A lot of life gurus will ask you to look ahead five or ten years. Where do you see yourself? Well, I’d like to ask you to look back just one year. Are you where you thought you’d be today? If you are like most of us, your life took some sharp twists and turns and now you are just somewhere life put you.
I’m not a big fan of five and ten year plans. Not that they don’t work for some, but for me, they just take me too far away from the present moment. You can get overwhelmed and lost in the future. I’ve had the most success in my life by looking just one year ahead, then making a few small changes that I can focus on each day. Those small changes will move me closer to where I want to be. When I master those first few changes, I add another one and keep going. The future is just the next few hours, not years. My focus goes up, my confidence grows and I move forward.
Time travel has some risks. If you jump too far into the future, you can lose sight of what needs to be done right now. For example, you want to own a home in five years. Cool! You start driving around neighborhoods, researching school districts. You keep thinking about the holidays and all the parties you will host. Oh, if you are throwing parties, then you will need new furniture and you know your hubby will want that huge grill he’s been eyeing at Home Depot. Guess that means new patio furniture too. Ohhh…and tiki torches. You love tiki torches.
Poof! One year has gone by and you forgot to skip that expensive morning coffee each day. You didn’t put $50 dollars away each week, just some weeks. What happened? Your mind spent most of its time in the future and you forgot about the small, daily items that help get you to that larger goal.
Large future goals are fine, but you need to break them down, then break them down again and again until you can focus on just a few simple things each day. You can, and should, look up from time to time and make sure you are heading in the right direction, but then put that head back down and keep going.
